This year more and more employees are going to get smartphones this holiday season. And more and more employees will be asking for access to email and data via those new smartphones.
You may take the stance and say “no” to access via smartphones. But these employees might have access to email and data already via their home computers or laptops. Their argument might be “I am already trusted with the data so why can’t I access it on my mobile device?”
The truth is it is going to get harder and harder to say “no” to employees that want access to information that will make them more productive. And their argument that it doesn’t cost the company any money because they are using their own smartphone is pretty compelling.
As we previously mentioned, smartphones are very likely to cause a data breach. So if you do allow employees to access data via their smartphone, make sure you put the proper protections in place to ensure that the data is safe. The Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) has a good website on how to protect smartphones.
